Time Machine Over The Air

I've been wondering for sometime if i could actually backup with Time Machine on a samba share.
Well, you can if you do the following in Terminal.app:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences \ TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Connect to your samba share and make sure you have enough space. Don't forget to save the password in the Keychain.

Fire up Time Machine and there you have it, a new backup disk to choose from (gotta love Leopard's "hidden" features).
So much for making you spend 300bucks...

I bet someday (after the Time Capsule selling period), if Apple doesn't have anything new to show on a Keynote presentation it will probably put a thing like this on a Software Update and use it as "new feature"

other than that if you perform the frist backup over USB and then later plug the disk into the AirPort Extreme everything will work, so it has been working for me. My guess here is that timemachine looks for a given file or disk image in your disks.
